Rechargeable wall lights: light where there was never a socket

Every home has a wall the light never reached. The turn halfway up the stairs. The corridor that runs past three doors and not one socket. The alcove beside the chimney breast, dark since the house was built. You have probably stopped noticing them, the way you stop noticing a door that sticks.

For about a century there was a good reason, and it had nothing to do with design.

Why wall lights were always about the wiring

A wall light needs a circuit behind it. That means a channel cut into plaster, a back box, an electrician, and a room you cannot use for two days. On a rewire it is a line item. On a Tuesday afternoon it is a project. And if you rent, it is simply not a conversation you get to have.

So the socket decided. It decided which wall could hold light and which could not, and the room arranged itself around that decision — sofa here, because the lamp has to reach; nothing there, because nothing can go there. Most of us inherited a lighting plan drawn by an electrician we never met.

That constraint has quietly ended, and it is worth understanding properly before you spend anything — including the parts that are less flattering to us.

How rechargeable wall lights work

Three parts: an integrated LED, a lithium cell, and a mount. No circuit, no back box, no electrician. You charge it over USB, usually every few weeks rather than every few days, and you switch it on by touch, by remote, or by walking past it.

The mount is the part worth looking at closely, because it is where good design separates from clever marketing. Some fittings come off the wall as a whole unit. Others leave a permanent back-plate in place and let only the light head lift away magnetically.

The second is better, and for a reason you only discover after living with one: the light returns to precisely the same position every time. A pair either side of a chimney breast stays a pair. A row down a corridor stays a row. With the first kind, you are re-hanging a picture every few weeks.

Can you put a rechargeable bulb in a light you already own?

Physically, often yes. Battery bulbs with E14 and E27 fittings exist, and they screw in like any other bulb.

We would still say no. They are heavy, so a delicate fitting droops. The runtime is short, because a bulb-shaped cell holds very little. You have to unscrew the thing to charge it, which means a chair and a Sunday. And your wall switch will do nothing at all, because the circuit behind it is dead — which is a strange feeling in your own house.

As a stopgap in a rented flat, fine. As an answer, no.

How long does the battery actually last?

Two different questions hide inside this one, and sellers tend to answer only the flattering one.

The first is runtime per charge. It depends on the size of the cell and, far more, on how brightly you run it. Here is a habit worth keeping: whenever you see a headline runtime figure, assume it was measured at the lowest setting. It almost always was.

Two examples from our own shelf, so you can see how wide the spread runs. Cubo has a 5200 mAh cell and gives around 10 hours at full brightness, or roughly 120 at its lowest. Monolith gives around 4 hours on a full charge.

That is a thirty-fold difference between two lights in the same small range, and it is not a difference in quality. Cubo is a working light built around a large battery. Monolith is a slab of travertine built around how it looks on a wall, with a slim body and very little room for a cell. Each is honest about what it is. Decide which job you are buying for, then compare numbers — not the other way round.

The second question is lifespan, and the answer is less comfortable. Lithium cells lose capacity gradually over years of charging, exactly like every rechargeable thing you own. The LED will outlast the battery. That is the real long-term weakness of the whole category, and anyone who does not mention it is selling.

Where the light can go now

This is the part that changes a room, and it is easier to feel than to explain.

Start with the stairs. A single warm light at the turn does more for how a house feels at night than almost anything else you can buy, and almost no staircase has a socket. Then the corridor: a row of matching lights down a hallway has always looked deliberate and expensive, because it always was expensive. It is now an afternoon.

Then the smaller moves. An alcove, where light on the shelves turns a storage wall into something worth looking at. Above a picture, which is the difference between a print on a wall and a hung work. Either side of a chimney breast, symmetrical, which has looked right for two hundred years and required an electrician for one. Beside a bed, where a wall light frees the whole surface of the nightstand — no cable down the back, no plug behind the headboard.

And underneath all of it: if you rent, this is the first time any of it has been available to you. That is not a small thing.

What they still cannot do

The constraint has moved. It has not disappeared, and it is worth being plain about where it now sits.

A cordless sconce will not light a room. It is accent light, not ambient light, and no amount of lumen marketing changes the physics of a small cell. If your living room is dim, this is not the answer to that problem.

It also will not give you one switch for everything. Each light is its own island, which is liberating until you are turning off six of them.

And it will not go outside. Both of ours are IP20, which means no moisture protection at all — fine for a hallway, a bedroom, a stairwell; not fine for a porch, a garden wall, or anywhere near a shower. Plenty of listings sold as "rechargeable outdoor wall lights" are also IP20. If a rating is not stated, assume the worst. For genuine outdoor use you want IP44 at minimum, IP65 if it will face driving rain.

There is one more, and it is the one people underestimate. If you know you will not remember to charge things, buy a mains fitting. A wall light with a flat battery is a shelf.

How to tell a considered one from a plastic puck

The market filled up quickly, and it filled up unevenly. Some of what is being sold is genuinely well made. Some of it is a moulded disc with a magnet glued to the back and a photograph taken in a room it has never been in.

Five things separate them, and only one is about the light itself.

The battery, stated in mAh. If a listing gives you a runtime but not a capacity, it is hiding the capacity. And look for the runtime at full brightness, which is the number that gets left out.

The colour of the light. 3000K is warm and belongs in a home. 4000K reads as an office and will fight everything else in the room. Some fittings offer several temperatures; some commit to one. Committing to one is not a limitation if it is the right one.

How it comes off to charge. A magnetic head that lifts away in a second is the difference between a light you keep charged and a light you stop using. This sounds minor. It is the single best predictor of whether the thing is still on your wall in a year.

The material, and what it does when the light is off. A wall light is lit for perhaps four hours a day. For the other twenty it is an object on your wall. Stone, wood and metal age; painted plastic does not age, it just gets older.

The IP rating and the charging port. IP20 indoors only. USB-C where you can get it, because you already own the cable.
